Though most of us don’t think much about it while we commute to work or run errands, driving is inherently dangerous. Despite mandated training, studying, and test-taking, at the end of the day we are still maneuvering extremely heavy machines. Many scenarios could leave you in an emergency situation. Here are 7 emergency items that no vehicle – or driver – should be without.
1. First Aid Kit
Whether you assemble your own kit or purchase a prepackaged one, having a first aid kit can literally prove to be a lifesaver. If you are injured in an accident or lost somewhere without gas, having a safety kit is important. There are many different things you may want to include, such as:
2. Water Bottle
It may not seem important, but water can serve many purposes. Not only can it hydrate you, but it can be poured into your radiator should your car overheat, or help to clean oil off of your clothes.
3. Warm Clothes
When you’re stuck in the car without a working heater, temperatures can get very cold overnight – especially if you live in a colder part of the country. It is helpful to keep blankets, sweatshirts, and even thermal sleeping bags in your trunk. You can use a blanket as a makeshift tarp, window shade, or towel if needed.
4. Spare Tire
Flat tires can be incredibly frustrating and a major inconvenience. That’s why having a spare tire and knowing how to change it is critical. Be sure to have the necessary tools – a jack, tire iron/wrench, and pipe – in your car.
5. Tool Kit
It is important to have basic tools should your car break down far from help. Useful items include:
If you live in a colder climate, you may also want to include a collapsible shovel, foam tire sealant, and an ice-scraper.
6. Emergency Flares
Sometimes our cars can break down in inconvenient or dangerous –locations. However, with orange or red reflective flares, you can draw attention to your presence. Simply place them around your car – even if you pull over to the side of the road.
7. Jumper Cables
It’s easier than you think for a car battery to die. Try leaving your lights on for hours while you are doing something and you’ll find that you may just come out to a dead battery. In these situations, jumper cables can help. You must attach them to the positive and negative battery terminals of another car and always follow the directions.
