Airbag Manufacturer Takata Expands Recall of Dangerous, Defective Airbags

In May of 2015, airbag manufacturer Takata announced that it would be recalling more than 35 million vehicles nationwide due to a potentially deadly product defect. At the time, this was called the largest recall in U.S automotive history.  Takata airbags are in most automobile brands that we all know and own. Automobiles such as Acura, Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Chrysler, and Ford, just to name a few.

On Tuesday, 5/23/16 Takata announced that this already massive recall will impact even more vehicles than previously thought. An additional 1.6 million vehicles in the U.S are being recalled due to defective Takata airbags, bringing the total number of affected cars to over 40 million.

Takata’s airbags contain a dangerous and potentially deadly product defect. The device that causes the airbags to inflate has been known to explode on impact, releasing dangerous metal shrapnel into the face and head of vehicle occupants. To date, 13 deaths and more than 100 injuries worldwide are linked to defective Takata airbags.

Millions of vehicle owners could be impacted by this recall. To view a full list of vehicle models that have been named as part of the Takata recall, click here. So far, vehicles from more than 17 different automakers have been affected.
