New Roundup Verdict Issued for $80 Million

A federal jury has ordered herbicide manufacturer Monsanto to pay $80 million to a man diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma after more than two decades of exposure to Roundup weed killer. A detailed article on the case and the verdict is available here.

The Verdict

Jurors in San Francisco awarded a 70-year-old California man over $80 million after determining exposure to the popular weed killer contributed to his cancer. The claim indicated that the popular herbicide Roundup was a “substantial factor” in developing his Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. They ruled Monsanto, recently acquired by the pharmaceutical company Bayer AG for $63 billion—failed to adequately warn of potential harm.

The verdict included $5.2 million in compensation and $75 million in punitive damages. The lawsuit alleged Roundup caused the man’s cancer, and that Monsanto should have provided warnings about the risks associated with long-term exposure to the product. Bayer AG announced it intends to appeal the verdict and continues to argue the herbicide is safe.

Another Major Lawsuit

As we reported in an earlier blog, a jury in the California State Superior Court found Roundup contributed to a former school groundskeeper’s Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, awarding him $289 million in compensatory and punitive damages. The verdict was later reduced to $78 million and is currently on appeal. That decision set a precedent for similar cases, with over 11,00 pending cases as of January 2019.
