Attorneys Chad McLain and Malcom McCollam Discuss Bicycle Safety on Good Day Tulsa

With schools out and summer vacation in full swing, it is a good time of year for parents to talk to their children about proper bicycle safety. Every year, thousands of people in Oklahoma are seriously injured in bicycle accidents.

Some of the accidents are due to bikers not following proper safety. And many bicycle accidents are caused by drivers of passenger vehicles, who are not paying attention or are not aware of cyclists around them.

There are a number of basic safety tips that every child and bicycle rider should know before getting on a bike.

#1 – Bicycle safety starts by wearing a helmet at all times. It is statistically proven that wearing a helmet reduces the risk of suffering serious or fatal head and brain injuries in the event of an accident.

#2 – Follow the rules of the road. Come to a full stop and check for oncoming cars at all stop signs and traffic lights. Stay in designated bike lanes whenever possible when riding alongside cars and other vehicles. Use the proper hand signals to reduce your risk of being involved in an accident.

#3 – Wear bright, reflective clothing if biking after dark. One out of every three bicycle accident fatalities occurs after the sun sets and visibility is low.

Graves McLain attorney and founding partner Chad McLain and attorney Malcolm McCollum, of-counsel attorney at Graves McLain and director of Tulsa Tough, recently appeared on Good Day Tulsa to share important bicycle safety tips for parents.
