Aurora Products Inc. has launched a voluntary nationwide recall of all products containing their brand of Natural Walnuts, citing concerns over possible Salmonella contamination. The recall was announced on Friday, March 27th when routine testing by an outside company revealed the presence of Salmonella in a package of Aurora Products Natural Almonds.
Aurora is currently working with its nationwide distributors to recall all possibly contaminated products, which include Natural Walnuts and all brands of Trail Mix containing Natural Walnuts. Consumers are urged to either destroy or return any Aurora products containing walnuts immediately.
According to the Center for Disease Control, the Salmonella bacteria causes approximately one million illnesses and 380 deaths in the United States every year. Unfortunately, Salmonella can survive in a variety of food products and must be handled with extreme caution when a possible outbreak is detected. Salmonella poisoning is rarely fatal, and in the cases where death does occur, the patients are almost exclusively small children, elderly adults, or anyone else with a weakened or compromised immune system.
In otherwise healthy individuals, Salmonella poisoning can cause symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, and fever. In a majority of cases, symptoms can last for a period of 4 to 7 days and patients often recover without medical treatment. However, more severe cases of Salmonella exposure can lead to contamination of the bloodstream and illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.
Thus far, no illnesses related to this particular contamination have been reported.
