Auto safety regulators are requesting that smartphone manufacturers create a “driver mode” for smartphones to help combat the rising number of motor vehicle fatalities caused by distracted driving.
The new proposed feature is modeled after “airplane mode,” which prevents a mobile device from sending or receiving communications while flying. “Driver mode” would restrict certain mobile apps and features from running while the user is behind the wheel.
This feature could help promote higher levels of concentration and awareness among drivers by giving them less incentive to reach for their phones. As we become increasingly more connected by our mobile devices, people are constantly tempted to use their phones in unsafe circumstances. By restricting certain apps from running while the user is driving, the power of distraction is taken away.

Recent NHTSA studies indicate that the rate of traffic fatalities has increased by 10.4% in the first half of 2016 alone. More than 100 people die every day in traffic accidents. These statistics are troubling, and meaningful action must be taken to put an end to these tragic fatalities.
