Bridgestone-Firestone Recalls More Than 36,000 Truck Tires That May be Defective

More than 36,000 tires used on tractor-trailers and other large transport trucks are being recalled due to serious safety concerns. Bridgestone-Firestone is recalling the tires after safety testing revealed that the tread can separate from the body, causing the tires to fail.

The recall states that this tire failure can cause a sudden loss of air pressure and greatly increase the risk of a crash. The tires being recalled are 22.5” Firestone FS561 tractor-trailer tires manufactured between January 2015 and January 2016.

Equipment that has not been properly inspected or maintained, overloaded or unsecured cargo, and driver error account for a vast majority of accidents involving tractor-trailers and other large trucks. Far too many motorists are seriously or fatally injured every year in truck accidents. According to the most recent data available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • Nationwide, 3,964 people were killed in traffic accidents involving large trucks in 2013.
  • More than 70% of people fatally injured in large truck accidents were occupants of smaller passenger vehicles in 2013.
  • In Oklahoma in 2013, there were 116 trucks involved in fatal traffic accidents, resulting in a total of 112 fatalities.
