Across America, head concussions are a growing problem. These injuries can have a damaging, life-threatening impact on patients. Many people do not know how to identify a concussion.

Common concussion symptoms can include:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Blurry or double vision
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Sometimes a victim will describe “just not feeling right” after a blow to the head

On Monday, November 14th, Dr. Sherburn will be delivering an important lecture aimed at increasing awareness about concussions, as well as how to properly recognize them and manage the symptoms. This lecture is free and open to the public.

Dr. Sherburn explains that in the event of any type of head injury, a proper medical evaluation must be taken immediately. This is particularly important for young people that participate in youth sports, specifically football.

It is extremely important that if parents, coaches, or teammates suspect that a player may have a concussion, they must be removed from play immediately and taken through the proper concussion protocol. Dr. Sherburn explains that a key concern regarding this matter is not the first concussion in itself, but the second concussion or “second-impact syndrome.” This condition can cause severe swelling of the brain and is often fatal.

A common misconception about concussions is that they are mainly caused by sports-related injuries.

Attorney Chad McLain explains people often fail to recognize symptoms of concussions after car and motor vehicle accidents. He also explains that a direct blow or impact to the head is not necessary to cause a concussion. Car-related concussions can also be caused by rapid side-to-side or back-and-forth motion of the head.a
