Chad McLain Visits Good Day Tulsa to Discuss How to Avoid Drunk or Distracted Driving

On November 21st, Chad McLain of Graves McLain appeared on KTUL’s Good Day Tulsa to discuss drunk and distracted driving, and the danger it can present during the holiday season. He offered insight on how to identify and eliminate risks on the road. Watch the video:

Defining Drunk or Distracted Driving

According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), 2,205 people were killed in Oklahoma in vehicle crashes involving drunk drivers between 2003 and 2012. Under Oklahoma law, drivers with a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of 0.08% or higher are considered alcohol-impaired. It is important to note that impairment is not determined by the type of drink, but rather by the amount of alcohol consumed over time.

  • One drink is 12oz of beer, 5oz of wine, or 1.5oz of distilled spirits
  • The average person can metabolize one regular drink every hour

Distracted driving is any activity diverting attention away from the task of safe driving—including phone calls, texting, and eating or drinking. In 2016, the state of Oklahoma reported:

Avoid the Risk

To lower the risk of drunk driving, choose a designated driver if you plan to consume alcohol. If you’ve been drinking, ask for a ride or use a ride-sharing service. If needed, protect others who attempt to drive after consuming alcohol by taking their keys.

To avoid distracted driving, use your cell phone for emergency situations only—and pull over safely to make a call. You can also do your multi-tasking outside the car. Focus on the road and the drivers around you. Avoid eating while driving, and get everything settled before you set off.
