Chad McLain Visits Good Day Tulsa to Discuss National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month

Recently, Chad McLain of Graves McLain appeared on KTUL’s Good Day Tulsa. With September being National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, Chad offered insight regarding the risks, frequency, and causes of spinal cord injuries.

What is a Spinal Cord Injury?

A spinal cord injury can occur whenever the spinal cord itself is damaged through impact or other trauma. The resulting injury causes a communication block, which limits the passage of signals between the spinal cord and the brain.

How Common Are Spinal Cord Injuries?

Each year, some 12,500 spinal cord injuries occur in the U.S.—and between 240,000 and 337,000 Americans currently live with a spinal cord injury. While half of these injuries occur to patients aged 16 to 30, falls are the most common cause for patients aged 65 or older.

What Are The Leading Causes of Spinal Cord Injuries?

In the U.S., car accidents are the leading cause of spinal cord injuries; followed by falls, acts of violence, and sports injuries. It is important to note that alcohol is a contributing factor in nearly one-fourth of all spinal cord injuries. According to the Mayo Clinic, the breakdown is as follows:

  • 42% Motor Vehicle Accidents
  • 27% Slipping or Falling Injuries
  • 15% Acts of Violence
  • 8% Sports-Related Injuries
  • 9% Other Causes

How Can We Prevent Spinal Cord Injuries?

Considering that motor vehicle accidents and falls account for the overwhelming majority of spinal cord injuries, some simple precautions behind the wheel and at home can lower the risk. According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, these precautions include:

  • Always Wear a Seatbelt While Driving
  • Use Child Safety and Booster Seats
  • Never Drive Under the Influence
  • Always Pay Attention to the Road
  • Clear Your Home of Tripping Hazards
  • Install Secure Handrails on Staircases
