Choose a Fun, Safe Halloween Costume with your Children

Halloween is almost here, and kids all over Tulsa are getting excited to show off their favorite costume to all of their friends. Whether your child wants to dress up as their favorite celebrity, movie character, superhero, or anything in between, it is important to choose a costume that will be both fun and safe.

There are some important precautions that parents can take when choosing a costume with their child. Below are some important costume safety tips that can help ensure that you and your children have a fun and safe Halloween:

  • Avoid masks that may limit your child’s vision: It is crucial that kids look both ways before crossing the street, especially while trick-or-treating. If they are wearing a mask that makes it difficult to see clearly, it could jeopardize their safety. If your child’s costume involves a mask, expand the eye and mouth holes so that your child has no trouble breathing or seeing in all directions.
  • Avoid dark colors, or attach reflective tape to your child’s costume: After the sun goes down it becomes much more difficult for drivers to see trick-or-treaters wearing dark colors. If your child’s favorite costume uses dark colors, attach reflective tape to the front and back to increase their visibility to motorists. You can even make the tape into a creative and fun part of their costume!
  • Choose a flame-resistant costume: Children will be walking by jack-o-lanterns and candles while they trick-or-treat, so this is extremely important. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), at least 16 children have suffered burn injuries involving a Halloween costume since 1980. Choose a costume made of flame-retardant polyester material, or look for a flame-resistant label on store-bought costumes.
  • Make sure your child has safe, sturdy walking shoes and that their costume is not too long: Long robes or dresses could be a tripping hazard for young children, so be aware when choosing a costume. If necessary, trim some of the length off of their costume so that your child can walk safely all night.
  • Supply your child with the necessary safety equipment: If your child is going out with his or her friends and without direct parental supervision, make sure they are equipped with a flashlight or glow sticks, and cell phone so that they can see where they are going and can call you quickly during any type of emergency situation.
