FDA Recalls Irbesartan Over Potential Cancer Risk

Another manufacturer has issued recalls for Irbesartan after the frequently prescribed blood-pressure medication tested positive for a probable human carcinogen. A detailed article examining the latest in a series of recalls is available here.

According to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a pharmaceutical manufacturer has recalled multiple lots of Irbesartan. These drugs, classified as angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), are commonly prescribed to treat high blood pressure and congestive heart failure.

About the Latest Recalls

Prinston Pharmaceuticals has recalled eight lots of Irbesartan and Irbesartan/Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) tablets after those drugs tested positive for trace amounts of N-nitroso-diethylamine (NDEA), which is a probable human carcinogen. According to additional sources, the recalled products include:

  • Prinston Irbesartan 300mg
  • Prinston Irbesartan HCTZ 300mg/12.5mg
  • Prinston Irbesartan HCTZ 150mg/12.5mg

Patients who take these medications are advised to check with a qualified physician before discontinuing any medications. Additional information on these recalls is available at the FDA’s consumer-protection website.
