FDA Strengthens Warnings of Severe Kidney Injuries Caused by Diabetes Medication Invokana

The Food and Drug Administration just issued another Drug Safety Communication alerting doctors and patients about serious health risks associated with several type 2 diabetes medications, including Invokana.

The FDA is strengthening warnings about the risk of serious, acute kidney injuries for patients taking type 2 diabetes medications canagliflozin (Invokana, Invokamet) and dapagliflozin (Farxiga, Xigduo XR). Patients taking these drugs have experienced acute kidney injuries. In some cases, patients taking these drugs have experienced total kidney failure.

Patients are advised to seek medical attention immediately if they experience any of the following signs or symptoms while taking Invokana, Invokament, or any other type 2 diabetes medication containing canagliflozin or dapagliflozin:

  • Decreased urine
  • Swelling in the legs
  • Swelling in the feet

Between March of 2013 and October of 2015, the FDA received many confirmable cases of acute kidney injury from patients taking these medications.
