FDA Warns Patients Against Purchasing Herbal Weight Loss Supplement Containing Banned Substance

The Food and Drug Administration announced on Thursday, October 1st that consumers should avoid purchasing “Ultimate Herbal Slimcap,” a dietary weight loss supplement that was found to contain a banned substance among its active ingredients.

This product is currently being marketed over the internet to consumers as a safe and effective way to aid in weight loss efforts. However, the reality is that this product contains dangerous and hidden ingredients that could cause serious, or even potentially deadly, side effects for certain users.

The manufacturers of “Ultimate Herbal Slimcap” claim that the supplement contains a blend of natural herbs as well as other “proprietary ingredients” that will help users manage their appetite and lose weight quickly. The manufacturer fails to mention that one of these “proprietary ingredients” is sibutramine, a controlled substance that was banned by the FDA in 2010.

Sibutramine has been proven to cause serious and potentially life-threatening side effects in patients with a previous history of heart conditions and coronary problems. Sibutramine may increase a user’s heart rate and blood pressure, leading to an increased risk of heart attack or stroke. The risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke is even greater in patients that have previously been diagnosed with any of the following conditions:

  • Coronary artery disease
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Arrhythmia
  • Stroke

This banned substance may also cause serious adverse reactions with other medications that a consumer may be taking.

Unfortunately, this FDA warning about “Ultimate Herbal Slimcap” is only one example of a growing trend of dietary supplements that contain hidden drugs and chemicals. These dietary supplements, which are often marketed as “all-natural,” do not require FDA approval and testing before going to market. As a result, the FDA is often unable to determine whether or not these products are safe for consumption. The FDA warns consumers to exercise extreme caution before purchasing dietary supplements marketed for the following purposes:

  • Weight loss
  • Sexual enhancement
  • Bodybuilding
