Observing Holiday Safety on Good Day Tulsa

On Thursday, November 19th, Attorney Chad McLain of Graves McLain appeared via Skype on KTUL’s Good Day Tulsa program to offer some tips for holiday safety that apply to everyone. Watch the segment:

Holiday Gatherings

A universal safety concern this year is COVID-19, and the precautions everyone should take. Current CDC recommendations advise against travel, but if you must travel, check the local travel restrictions for the area to which you’ll be heading to. Don’t travel if you’re not feeling well.

If you’ll be hosting others, do your best to observe social distancing guidelines, wear masks, and make sure to have supplies such as hand sanitizer and extra masks available to guests. Consider holding the activities outdoors, weather-permitting.

Celebrating and Driving

A serious issue that only gets worse over the holiday season is drunk driving. In fact, nearly one-third of all drunk driving accidents occur during the holidays. In Oklahoma, a BAC over .08 is considered impaired driving, and is illegal. There are several simple tips you can follow to avoid putting yourself in a potentially dangerous situation:

  • The easiest way to avoid drunk driving is not to drink any alcohol if you plan on driving.
  • If you plan to drink, make sure to have a designated driver. Plan this before you head out for the evening.
  • If you see someone who is planning on driving and shouldn’t be, take away their keys and help them find an alternate mode of transportation.
  • Calling a ride-sharing service such as Uber is another responsible option.

Decorating with Safety in Mind

While it’s tempting to go all-out with the lights and decorations, it’s important to make sure you keep safety in mind while being festive. Electricity is a major concern. Before using lights, examine the wires and bulbs to make sure they’re in good working order. Never attach lights using nails or staples. And be sure to have a spotter while using a ladder to reach those high areas.
