Roundup Active Ingredient Found in Cereal, Snack Products

A number of cereals and oat-based snack products have tested positive for trace amounts of glyphosate—the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup Weed Killer. An article on the study and its findings is available here.

About the Study

Tests performed by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found traces of glyphosate—the active ingredient in Roundup—in 21 oat-based cereal and snack products. The group says the levels found were above what it deems safe for children in 17 of those products.

The 21 products tested are made by General Mills—which said it is working to minimize pesticide use on the ingredients used in its products. The report is in addition to another from the EWG, which found traces of glyphosate in Cheerios and Quaker brand products last year.

A Pervasive Reach

This new report also follows a study by the United States Public Research Group (USPIRG) Education Fund which uncovered trace amounts of glyphosate in several popular brands of beer and wine.

That report tested five brands of wine, fourteen brands of beer, and one hard cider beverage to reveal detectable levels of glyphosate in nearly all of them—including three beverages marketed as organic. A blog on that study is available here.

Glyphosate—the active ingredient in Roundup—is the most widely used weed killer in the world. While Monsanto and its parent company Bayer A.G. continue to maintain Roundup is safe, the World Health Organization considers glyphosate a “probable human carcinogen.”

Multiple Verdicts

As reported in an earlier blog, the California State Superior Court found Roundup contributed to a former school groundskeeper’s Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and subsequently awarded him $289 million. Jurors in San Francisco also awarded a 70-year-old California man $80 million after determining exposure to Roundup contributed to his cancer. A third jury in Alameda County ordered Monsanto to pay $2 billion to a Northern California couple also suffering from Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
