Police in Stillwater, Oklahoma, a town 70 miles west of Tulsa, reports that a local student has been hospitalized after he was struck by a car as he exited a school bus. An article on this emerging story is available here.
The accident occurred near Husband Street and Miller Avenue. Police sources indicate the 15-year-old boy suffered a head injury in the collision. He was flown to nearby Stillwater Medical Center for immediate treatment.
The boy was later transferred to an Oklahoma City hospital. Officials at the scene confirmed the bus driver had activated the vehicle’s stop sign and had red lights flashing at the time of the accident.
According to another news source, the woman driving the car, Thao Hoang of Stillwater, received citations for both inattentive driving and failing to stop for a school bus.
School Bus Laws in Oklahoma
Under Oklahoma state law, all vehicles—whether following behind a bus or approaching from the opposite direction—must stop for a school bus with either flashing red lights or their stop sign activated on an undivided road. Traffic cannot proceed until the lights or signs are deactivated.
Exceptions only apply if the bus is on a different roadway or in a loading zone by a controlled-access highway where pedestrians are unable to cross. Violation of this law could lead to a one-year license suspension.
