Why You Need Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage?

Twenty-five percent (25%) of drivers in Oklahoma do not carry auto insurance. So, what happens when you are injured in a car wreck by a driver without insurance, or not enough insurance? You find yourself stuck with large out-of-pocket expenses for medical care or health insurance deductibles. If your injuries render you unable to work, lost wages can further compound your financial problems and cause even more stress.

How do you protect yourself from this situation? By purchasing Uninsured Motorist (UM) coverage, Underinsured Motorist (UIM) coverage, and Medical Payment Coverage (MPC) through your auto insurance carrier. These coverages often referred to as first-party coverage, are designed to compensate you when you are injured in a car wreck caused by:

  • a driver that has no automobile insurance;
  • a driver that does not have enough automobile insurance to cover your damages;
  • a driver that flees the scene before insurance information is exchanged; or
  • a driver that strikes you while walking.

These first-party coverages are optional, the amounts you can purchase vary, and your auto insurance carrier will charge a separate premium for each coverage. Don’t assume you have purchased these coverages when you tell your insurance carrier that you want “full coverage” on your car. There is no such thing as “full coverage”. In Oklahoma, you must be specially asked and reject UM/UIM in writing.  You must elect MPC and the amount of coverage you want.

In Oklahoma, drivers are mandated to carry a minimum of $25,000 in liability coverage. Unfortunately, medical expenses, lost wages, and debilitating injuries can quickly exceed this amount of coverage. Be sure to protect yourself by purchasing Uninsured Motorist (UM) coverage, Underinsured Motorist (UIM) coverage, and/or Medical Payment Coverage (MPC).
