In one major American city, a new report has uncovered dangerous levels of asbestos remain in the air in that city’s older school buildings. Once hailed for its durability and heat resistance, asbestos can be found nationwide in schools built before 1980. It appears as insulation wrapped around steam pipes, sprayed on walls and ceilings as soundproofing in auditoriums, and used in the manufacture of floor and ceiling tiles.

The symptoms of Mesothelioma—rare cancer affecting the lining of the lung or abdomen—may not appear for 30 to 50 years after a patient’s initial exposure to the product. Since 1960, exposure to asbestos has been the only cause of Mesothelioma.
